Tent camping is one of the best ways to spend a long holiday weekend in Indiana. It’s a simple pleasure for many families and memories are made even if things don’t go smoothly. As a campground owner, I see many families that are prepared for a weekend of “roughing it” in the woods, but I also see the same number that come to the campground without a clue as to what to expect. Holiday weekends can be especially trying for the most experienced camper and become a nightmare for the rookies. I want to offer three tips to give those new to camping a fighting chance to enjoy their weekend with the lowest level of stress. The first thing you should do as a camping rookie is to make a list of the items you will need(tent, sleeping bags, food, coolers, etc.) Gather those things together and make sure everything is organized. Check out some websites for lists that others have generated. Second, call the campground where you are going and ask about the services offered there. Is there a shower house? Playground? Camp Store? Is the area in full sun or wooded? The answers to those questions may change the list of items needed. Are pets allowed? If so, do you need to provide proof of vaccination? Third, remember that many other people have had the same great idea that you did that holiday weekend- to go camping. You may find your family in close quarters with other people. The crowds on holiday weekends may be noiser than what you like. Although every campground has established quiet hours, they are usually extended to midnight on holiday weekends. Management does their best to keep everything running smoothly, but the cooperation of campers goes a long way to making an enjoyable experience for everyone. Have a sense of humor about the behaviors of others around you. The common goal for everyone is to have fun and relax while camping. Some people just do it differently than others!
